Small confession: I’m never fully confident about writing my little sum up of the bands I survey, because I don’t write like a music writer (and this is no exception). It seems as adults the insecurites of our teen years are supposed to be gone, and we are to be confident in all our actions. But the more I talk to other people in the realm of “adulthood” it’s not that your insecurities fall away from our teen years, we just get better at working through the fear. Why do I go into this? Because I feel Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits is music for adults, the twenty thirty forty somethings all still figuring it out. With lyrics like “Saturday friends, are you sure of them?”, from the song Right Ones, it opens up a peep hole into the land of “adults”. When we are teens we know who our friends are, we have our clique, and even if we don’t like them we stick with them. As adults we have the power to walk away, we can find new friends, we don’t have to stick with the wrong ones. There is a familiarity about the music of Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits, and I believe that familiarity comes from the fact their music encompasses the insecurity and the power that we have as “adults”. I don’t really care for the term “Young Adult” because it indicates an age in which you grow into an adult. I feel that being an adult is a mindset. And that mindset, I don’t think anyone ever feels like an adult.Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits get that, or at least their music conveys it.

( and for a friend that said i didn’t say anything about the band, in my best music writer voice: the music is dreamy but not trancey, upbeat but not pop, more like you have a small pep in your step, there is no gimmick or niche, it just is what it is and that’s good.)

Sylvia Ji paints the presence of strong and powerful women with a mysterious gaze rendering them further in to their untouchable state. Known for her Dia Del Muertos women, their faces painted in the Day of the Dead sugar skull style, she makes each pattern as unique to her subjects face as the character she creates. Recently her work has been exploring Native American allegory and the essence of its rich history and culture. A10.There have been many. Off the top of my head I would say The Jesus Lizard reunion show last year in Milwaukee was a face-melter
Strong coffee and crisp morning air. A curious sun peaks through the blinds after the voyeuristic moon goes to bed. Murder By Death is grounded in there honest song writing and rich thick sound, playing the soundtrack to a passionate hearts intimate moments. Capturing the soul touching and gut wrenching knots we all try to ignore giving our genuine emotions an authentic voice. I define music by the emotions and images it invokes, I tend to stray away from normal Music journalism jargon. But I want to say that to me alt-country has always been a genre of music that speaks to my soul. That in another life I was a whiskey drinking man with a beat up truck, and a broken heart carrying a tragic story with hope always on the horizon but sometimes gets to hard to see. Well my past life would listen to Murder By Death and with songs like Foxglove, might be inspired to try again for that glimmer of love and hope.

Q1. What is the best show (music) you have ever been too?

A1. I have been to only a handful of shows, I actually don’t enjoy them, but I keep going to see GWAR over an over again.

Q2. If you could live in any time period or be anyone dead or alive, who would you be or where would you go?

A2. I would want to be Charles Eames.

Q3. What is something you hate doing, but must do anyways?

A3. oil the chain on my motorcycle.

Q4. If you had to give up one of your 5 senses, which one would you abandon?

Smell, its half of tasting, so I think tasting might be half smell, it seems the most efficient to only give up 1/3 of the Olfactor. Also I have a very strong sense of smell and it usually isn’t a good thing.

Q5. Most rewarding moment of your life thus far?

A5. I am very into the reward system in my life, I constantly reward myself or just seek pleasure in general. From a philanthropic perspective I think the day I found myself putting my coat in the room of a friend’s uncles 16 year old step-daughter (at a party) Her room was like many teenager’s plastered with magazine photos of bands and fashion shoots. Its like one big inspiration board for who they want to be and what they think is cool. Above her vanity mirror she had cut out and glitter glued every one of my paintings from the pages of RVAMAG (Richmond’s only art magazine.) I felt super proud that she saw that work and with no connection to me, saw something in it that inspired her. I felt like maybe the honesty and power and grace I hope is in my work might be influencing someone. Thats what I really want.

Q6. If you owned a parrot, what would you teach it to say?

A6. “Winter is coming!” and “I can see your insides!” or “Muad’ Dib” or “I can see your sins!”

Q7. How old were you the first time you got drunk? How was the experience?

A7. I was 15 and blake bullard made me fuzzy navels, i danced around his living room while he played his grand piano, i ended up laying under it listening to the sounds and laughing. it was so wonderful.

Q8. Biggest Pet Peeve?

A8. I don’t really have one, except even though i like doing the dishes at my apartment i secretly hate washing dishes from food i didn’t eat and/or am allergic too. it makes me bitter. just for a second.

Q9. What was your childhood ambition?

A9. I always wanted to be an artist, pretty much thats it.

Q10. Is there any toy you really wanted as a kid but was never given?

A10. Did you ever buy it for yourself when you got older? I honestly don’t think so. I liked the toys I had, the ones i could never get or make i still can’t and I wasn’t as into toys as I was into books and tools. I have definitely bought myself alot of those.

Cathrine Brooks paints beauty suspended in a world of ribbon, nature, bubbles and pearls. Capturing the essence of femininity, it’s power and elegance. Her creativity transcends the canvas as she sometimes pushes her worlds onto laser cut wood and books with bottles. With an electric personality the work equally vibrates with life. Using light to highlight and illuminate her subjects, she creates romance and mystery, a dreamland where our imaginations can wander.

Roll down the windows and turn up the stereo, White Arrows is on the (radio). Well not really, but their catchy indie pop sound has my vintage boots tapping and my thrift store skirt twirling. If we still had indie 103.1 I wouldn’t be surprised to hear them put on the rotation. But I guess I’ll have to rely on college radio stations instead. One can’t deny that the their sound is vaguely familiar but it’s far from being un-original. Creating their distinctive style with fun songs and sing a long lyrics I would put them on every road trip *mix tape. Speaking of road trip, White Arrows will be playing Silverlake in Pomona tomorrow ($12 @ the door), so put on the ipod/mixtape and sit on the 10E, the crazy girl dancing in her car next to you…chances are that’s me!

Q1. Most wild and crazy thing you have done thus far in your life?

A1. I rode my bike at night with the Wolf Pack Hustle years ago.  Less than 2 blocks into the ride, I rode straight into a pothole and was launched over the handlebars of my bicycle.  I ended up with two pins in my pinky and six stiches in my face.  It was awesome.

Q2. Whats the most interesting thing you found lying on the street/sidewalk/ground/random place?

A2. $20. I was 10 years old. My two older brothers and I were walking home from school in the San Fernando Valley, and I caught sight of it. They took it from me and insisted that we buy baseball cards with it. I didn’t get to use any of the money for myself.

Q3. How many car accidents have you been in?

A3. At least 10. I have a knack for hitting inanimate objects (dumpsters, parked vehicles, etc.)

Q4. Do you have a phobia?

A4.  Acrophobia (irrational fear of heights). The older I get, the more intense the fear.

Q5. If you could morph into any animal what would it be?

A5.  A cat.

Q6. What was your childhood ambition?

A6. Decline to answer.

Q7. Have you ever been in a food fight?

A7. Yes, in 3rd grade. I was suspended from Hebrew Day School for one day.

Q8. If you had to give up one of your 5 senses, which one would you abandon?

A8. Smell. As a male, I already suffer from a bad sense of smell. I can’t miss what I’ve never really had.

Q9. What do you wish was invented?

A9.  A “waste black hole,” to put all the trash of the world in so that it can no longer pollute the earth.

Q10. Do you have a childhood memento you keep with you always?

A10. A picture of my bandmate from when we were 12 years old. It’s adorable and prominently displayed on the refrigerator.

I have a tendency to talk about things I know nothing about. Take The Pity Party for example, their music has a late 90’s Lower East Side sound to them. But if you asked me to compare it to another 90’s group I can’t name one, all I can say is I think “Love Lies” could have fit in perfectly on the tv show Buffy The Vampire Slayer’s soundtrack  (which is my favorite show of all time – I love that soundtrack, so that’s quite a compliment). And I’ve never been to NY’s Lower East Side, but I know a bit about it and there is a basement bar quality to the hypnotic voice of singer Julie Edwards. It seems lately the LA music scene seems to be saturated with a vintage beach/ surf sound, so it’s refreshing to be torn from this “California” sound and hear something a bit more grity.

Sign: Aquarius

Favorite:

Scent: that sweet, sugary smell when you walk into an ice cream parlor
Color: Black

Q1. If you could go anywhere in time where would it be and why?
A1. How do I choose? I’d want to check out so many! I think I’d start with the very beginning of life and see what the deal with that was. Then I’d want to check out the beginnings of human civilization, and then I’d check out Jesus and see what the truth was about him. Oh, and I’d need to see if Atlantis was real. Then I’d want to visit Stonehenge and the Pyramids to see if aliens really helped out with those. And so on and so on. I could know the answers to every question we’ve ever had about the past.

Q2. What fun fact about yourself is most shocking?
A2. I met Ron Jeremy at a party once and listened to him play classical piano.

Q3. Most exciting moment of your life thus far?
A3. I think it would have to be finding my boyfriend and falling in love. There’s nothing better than finding the person you’re meant to be with.

Q4. Do you have a lucky charm?
A4. No, but I’ve had a pretty unlucky year, so I need to start working on this.

Q5. If your artwork was a cereal, which one would it be and why?
A5. Well, this is a pretty cheesy analogy, but I’d say it would be Life cereal because each painting describes my own life and experiences. And there’s some sweetness to them, without being fruity. 😉

Q6. If you were in Willy Wonka’s factory, what would you be looking forward to the most.
A6. Well, eating as much candy as I could of course! I would not be looking forward to riding on that gondola thing. That thing was crazy freaky.

Q7. What do you miss most about being a kid? What’s the best thing about being an adult?
A7. I miss the fun and freedom of being a kid, long summer days with no obligations and the endless possibilities of living in my imagination. The best thing about being an adult is having a love and appreciation for things I didn’t understand as a kid.

Q8. First show (music) did you ever go to?
A8. Honestly, the first one I can remember is Sesame Street Live when I was 5, but that probably doesn’t count. I remember going to see the band Joan of Arc in Cleveland when I was in high school.

Q9. If you knew when the world was going to freeze for ten minutes, what would you plan to do in those 10mins?
A9. Ok, so I’m probably spending too much time analyzing this question. So does it mean that time is frozen for ten minutes and I can do whatever I want while time waits for me? Or does it mean that the entire world is frozen in ice for 10 minutes? Or does it mean the world will end in 10 minutes and all humans will die in a second Ice Age and I have to figure out how to spend those last few minutes? The best option I see out of those three would be that time is frozen for 10 minutes and I have a few free minutes to do what I want while the rest of world waits in time limbo. That being the case, and I’m sure this is very anticlimactic, but I’d probably just take a nap. 😉

Q10. What animal trait do you wish to possess?
A10. Flight. Or maybe being able to breathe underwater

After taking a few art classes all I can think is that Melissa Forman captures the classic idea of Venus, even if she is not aware of doing so. Painting beautiful women, their regal and loving presence amongst flora and fauna explains the relationship of the potential goddess. While she paints women that look out to us, it is obvious that not only the viewer but their surrounding world is completely focused on this possible Venus. Pulling from centuries ago and using photographs from the present she blends the two worlds together into this modern day version of the idealized woman.

Q4. If you could live in a movie for a day, which movie would it be? Would you be yourself or another character?
A4. That’s a tough one. There are many forms I’d like to take in many films though I’d always be me. I recently saw Akira Kurosawa’s film ‘Dreams’. I’d love to just run through the Van Gogh part as myself.

Q5. If your art was an ice cream flavor which one would it be?
A5. Green Tea

Q6. Did you have an imaginary friend as a child?
A6. Never.

Q7. Personal Quote?
A7. All is pretty.

Q8. Do you believe in horoscopes and zodiac signs?
A8. I believe in life and I believe in death. I don’t believe in much in-between.

Q9. Do you drink coffee? If so how many cups a day?
A9. I drink about 4 cups in the morning.

Q10. Best show you have ever been too?
A10.I went to college in Olympia, Washington around 2000. I miss the local acts at local bars more than anything I’ve seen since.

When it came time for me to describe Joshua Petker’s art I was at a momentary loss of words. I love his use of color and I couldn’t find the correct word to use until now, flow. Joshua Petker allows his paint to flow in and out of itself to enhance and vibrate each individual color. The initial word I wanted to use was blend, but the colors aren’t blended. They stand a lone yet interact, like two lovers in a swimming pool flirtatiously circling one another. Filled with movement the composition is grounded and focused on his beautiful and edgy women. They are a solid presence in his pieces, fully immersed in their surrounding world yet completely detached. A silent self awareness.

Please visit Joshua Petker’s website to see more of his work.

GG= Geoff Geis (vocals, guitar)
MG= Morgan Gerstmar (viola, violin, saw, vocals)
RV= Rand Voorhies (drums, vocals)

1. Who was your first celebrity crush?
JE
: Scott Baio. Love me some Chachi.
RV: Remember that crappy Married with Children knockoff called ‘Unhappily Ever After’? I think I had a crush on the girl who played the equivalent of Christina Applegate’s character. I was 12- give me a break.
GG: MC Hammer.
DD: Dead even: Rainbow Brite/Strawberry Shortcake.
MG: Brian May.

2. Most awkward encounter with someone you were in to?
JE
: Most of my encounters with people I like are of the awkward kind. I thank the all-girls high school I was forced to attend for my social skillz.
MG: Boob slipped out.
GG: Hit her in the face.
RV: Trying to kiss this girl goodbye who was totally not into me. It’s a long story I guess, but believe me it was awkward.
DD: Got hit in the face.

3. Favorite childhood activity?
GG: Pickin’ boogers.
RV: Playing video games with my best friend and listening to “Motorcade of Generosity” by Cake.
MG: Pretending to be an animal (wolf, lion, griffin, dragon).
JE: I used to line up my My Little Ponies (I had about 30 of them) in a straight, single file line and move each one forward about an inch one at a time. I used to walk them all throughout the house like this. It would keep me busy for hours!
DD: Eating/horseback riding.

4. Biggest Pet Peeve?
DD: Misogyny, Manifest Destiny and smacking.
GG: Douglas screams loudly for food, every morning.
JE: Heavy doors
RV: When someone asks that kind of question to which it’s not possible to answer both politely and intelligently. My favorite example is when someone asked this guy Charles Babbage “Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into your machine the wrong figures, will the right answers come out?” Mr. Babbage’s only answer was “I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question.”
MG: Small eyes.

5. What TV show would you want to be on? And why?
DD: 30 Rock! Tina Fey is my hero.
RV: Law and Order SVU. Mostly I just want to hang out with/be Stabler.
MG: Who Wants to be a Millionaire, duh.
JE: Weeds. I don’t really do or sell drugs, but I think it would be neat to be a drug lord.
GG: Some game show, because I like prizes.

6. Do you have a phobia? If not, what fear of yours is down right close to a phobia?
MG: Triskaidekaphobia. *
JE: I’m afraid of spiders. Mostly I’m afraid of that movie that’s about being afraid of spiders.
GG: My fears aren’t particularly phobic in nature.
RV: Spiders. Definitely spiders.
DD: Gang rape.

7. Coffee Bean or Starbucks? How many cups of coffee do you drink a day?
JE: I prefer a homemade coffee. Or a McCafe beverage. I drink about 4 cups of coffee a day.
RV: Starbucks, just because I don’t even know where a Coffee Bean is. Actually, we have this awesome espresso machine in my lab that grinds and brews a really really good cup of coffee when you hit a button, and then cleans itself. When we first got it I was drinking around 24 oz of espresso a day, but I’ve cut down a lot.
GG: Teddy Roosevelt drank a gallon of coffee every day.
DD: My kitchen- BOOYA. Since the kidney stones, I’ve switched to tea.
MG: Coffee Bean but I always go to Starbucks when I have money. As many cups as needed.

8. When do you feel most creative?
RV: Those few seconds right before I fall asleep.
JE: Mornings and evenings. Afternoons totally zap my creativity.
DD: Just before waking/while in the shower/post-masturbation.
MG: When I’m in a creative mood
GG: It really varies.

9. What do you wish you were better at?
JE: Mind control
DD: Sleeping! Not taking things personally? Gamelan.
MG: Pretty much everything I do…
RV: Following my gut. I tend to weigh my options too much.
GG: Interviews.

10. Did you have your wisdom teeth pulled?
GG: The drugs they gave me were far worse than the surgery itself.
DD: They did not give me ANY laughing gas. They broke all 4 of my wisdom teeth in my jaw before they pulled them out in bloody bits. They would not let me keep them.
MG: Yep!
RV: Yeah, all 6 of them. I know, I’m the missing link.
JE: Yes. And I liked it.
