#SOTD January 2014 Playlist

#SOTD | Song of the Day

Once again I have a song for nearly half the month, and mid February… well I’ll get there. I should pop champagne and bathe in French Fries when I actually complete a full month long playlist from beginning to end. Not just a collection of songs discovered/ rediscovered during the month and haphazardly shared and posted on Twitter. I love #SOTD (song of the day) ! Especially when it gets love from the bands who’s songs I selected to declare #SOTD worthy. Yacht Band Music Twitter

So the other day I saw… HAIM

MY VERSION OF A SHOW REVIEW

I attended my first show of 2014 last Wednesday, and let me tell you, I Had An Incredible Most excellent show going experience.

On Tuesday an unidentified number texted me asking if I wanted to go see HAIM, or if I knew anyone who would want to see them; I love HAIM but I was cautious to immediately sign myself up for a mystery date.  Especially as I could potentially catch HAIM at another point in time, although they don’t have any shows scheduled in SO CAL except for Coachella. Which I don’t have tickets to attend.  So when the person identified themselves as my cousin, I was fully onboard till I was told it was at 1pm. The responsible adult/employee in me was hesitant to skip out on work so early, but as the show was only 15 minutes from my job. I decided on an Executive Life decision, and there was no way I was missing this great FREE show.  Plus if my work really needed me I could always return after.

TORCHES – There will be dwarves!

TORCHES

Torches had a very busy year in 2013. Stoked to start working with a new manager who’s resume includes working on Conan, Kimmel, and for band Local Natives. They had a fun residency at the Echo back in May, and put out a new EP, IF THE PEOPLE STARE the same month. Followed by a summer tour and rounding of the year with a fantastic show at the Echoplex with The Lonely Wild. Next in store is putting out a new album in 2014. And I had the chance to interview them before any of that happened in March of 2013. WOW! Yeah talk about not making a personally set deadline. Well they are pretty neat, so find out more about this local (Los Angeles) indie favorite Torches.

MAOI: Most wild and crazy thing you have done thus far in your life?
Azad: I’d say, deciding to drive across the country in a van with my friends to play for strangers. The last tour we did was the most extensive tour we’ve ever done. We started in LA and drove up the coast playing through these cities: Santa Cruz, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Minneapolis, New York (CMJ festival), and Chicago. I booked the tour myself and surprisingly enough we came back with money…profit was made. Tour was a success!
Eric: Kinda lame, but jumping off a 50 ft rock into a lake. I have a bad fear of heights

CSHR: You know, in a rational sense I do – humans are more reducible to a formula than we’d like to believe, so anyone with a decent grasp of the species can make pretty accurate predictions! I don’t think our fates are dictated by the stars, but I do think it’s pretty telling that over the past few millennia we’ve kept connecting the dots in the same way.

MAOI: Most wild and crazy thing you have done thus far in your life?

CSHR: Taking a 30-hour bus ride to spend a week with a romantic interest about 900 miles away from where my parents believed I was.

MAOI: If you could morph into any animal what would it be?

CSHR: A human. Say no to body dysphoria!

Song(s) of The Day

I enjoy posting “Song of the Day” or listening to a song and thinking this needs to be shared as SOTD, but my consistency with song(s) of the day is shameless. You would think for me a day lasted eight hundred and forty hours, give or take. Also I have this amazing ability to paste the same “amazing” song more than once over the course of a year. My solution to this debilitating SOTD problem (see a doctor if it begins to burn or itch); an excel doc! Wow I really am growing up; a part of me is so proud. I am going to be logging the songs I want to post, along with marking the day once its posted. The songs are going to be posted on Facebook and Twitter. But at the end of the month the entire list of songs I shared I will post here, for someone’s playlist making enjoyment.

This blog is my child, neglected in the past, but let’s say I went to blogger rehab, and I am determined to be a better mother; making amends. Earning its following and respect back through lots of small steps to rebuilding the trust we once had. And Blogger Social Services, will once again see me as a valued member of the blogging community.

Recipe for The Sweet Hurt

This is one of my favorite post from the past, and The Sweet Hurt just finished touring with A Fine Frenzy.

Ingredients:

The sigh of love at first sight captured in a mason jar
A thimble full of tears from a broken heart
A cup of petals from your favorite parks wild flowers
The scent of sugar cookies and their pillow
The air of a road trip through a long stretch of open road
A first kiss
Autumn leaves
Dash of hope
Pinch of whimsy

Stir in a large bowl with a wooden spoon
Roll out dough
Use cookie cutters with cute shapes

And bake at 375 F. for 25 minutes.

At the timers ring you have the delightful sweet treat of The Sweet Hurt.

This girl has more talent in her pinky finger than most popular musicians. It’s only a matter of time before her warm and earnest lyrics find its way to the masses ears and have their hearts swoon falling in love to her milk and honey voice. The Sweet Hurt could share a stage and open for Jenny Lewis and the crowd might forget who they were originally there to see. I’m itching to see where she goes in the next few years as I will be completely flabbergasted if I’m not seeing them play the Main Stage at Sunset Junction and be on the bill for yes dare I mention it, Coachella. These are mighty words I spew I know but I believe in this band just that much.

*This was originally written in 2010, funny how Sunset Junction is now bankrupt, time sure does fly.

Please listen to their amazing new LP as your heart might melt and mend all at the same time

Q1. Are you superstitious?

A1.I always cross my fingers on plane rides during take-off and landing.

Q2. Best show you’ve ever been too?

A2. This summer- Muse. Whether or not you like their music, the power of their shred cannot be denied.

Q3. What have you said you would never do, but have ended up doing?

A3.Rollercoasters.

Q4. Bathroom read?

A4. Nylon.

Q5. Most Embarrassing Moment?

A5. Traditionally, I cringe every day when I wake up. Oh God, this can’t be happening, this is so embarrassing.

Q6. If your music was ice cream, what flavor would it be?

A6. Correatown: mint chocolate chip, with a side of salted caramel. Mine: didn’t turn out right, looks kind of gross.

Q7. What was your favorite cartoon when you were a kid?

A7.Moomin.

Q8. What’s your vice?

A8. Cocktails. The more elaborate, the better.

Q9. When are you most creative morning, mid day, or evening?

A9. I get my best ideas when I’m about to fall asleep, which is incredibly unhelpful in terms of remembering any of them.

Q10. You were slipped a radioactive roofie by an evil scientist and now have mutated, what’s your superpower?

A10. I have the power to run errands without being seen, talked to, or intercepted by anyone I know, am vaguely acquainted with, or even complete strangers.

Q1. Are you superstitious?

A1. Just about fortune cookies.

Q2. Best show you’ve ever been too?

A2. Hall and Oates at the Hollywood Bowl. Wow. And the champagne and *pot brownies* didn’t hurt.

Q3. What have you said you would never do, but have ended up doing?

A3.Taking life really seriously. Yikes.

Q4. Bathroom read?

A4.Not my thing, really. Someone told me sitting on the toilet and reading will give you hemorrhoids and I’ve been freaked about it ever since.

Q5. Most Embarrassing Moment?

A5.A bird once dropped a giant shit bomb on my head while I was sitting in the sun in the Jardin de Luxembourg in Paris. It was truly awful. My friend was pouring water from a huge Evian bottle over my head trying to rinse it, and scandalized passersby were snickering and pointing.

Q6. If your music was ice cream, what flavor would it be?

A6. Mint Chocolate Chip, or Fig with Salted Caramel and Balsamic Swirl

Q7. What was your favorite cartoon when you were a kid?

A7. Gem, she was truly outrageous. Close second: GI Joe- I had a huge crush on the silent bearded Bazooka guy. And part of me also thought Cobra was sort of hot- all masked, whiney, and wearing a skin tight war-outfit.

Q8. What’s your vice?

A8.Staying up really late at night reading… and/or drinking too many cups of coffee. Which may be mutually related (I now realize).

Q9. When are you most creative morning, mid day, or evening?

A9.From 4pm – 12 midnight. It’s like a gong goes off and all my best ideas arrive with trumpets, but I’m usually unable to capture them for later because I’m making dinner, or out and about.

Q10. You were slipped a radioactive roofie by an evil scientist and now have mutated, what’s yoursuperpower?

A10.I can magically transport myself to and from places in an eye blink, and I can also bring my friends along if they are touching some part of my body. This is extremely useful when I have late night cravings for nutella crepes in Paris, whilst sitting on the couch in LA.

I couldn’t think of a better time or day to sit and listen to Correatown, trying to figure out how to explain the sound of their music. Drinking green tea with honey and watching the sun break through the rain clouds on a Sunday afternoon while “Shine Right Through” is playing, it’s kind of perfect. Correatown has a sweet indie sound, singer Angela Correa’s voice carried on the melody like a whisper of the wind.  There is something in the songs that gives a sense that there is a very me looking at me scenario, a self realization notion, yet that self realization is in observation. Like as if hearing the inner thoughts of the girl drinking coffee by themselves, the man walking down the street with a gentle smile, or your lover right before they wake; you’re seeing yourself.  I might sound completely insane or make no sense at all, but you can listen to their latest release Pleiades on Bandcamp and decide for yourself.

A10. Mediocre Music. Very in right now.

Small confession: I’m never fully confident about writing my little sum up of the bands I survey, because I don’t write like a music writer (and this is no exception). It seems as adults the insecurites of our teen years are supposed to be gone, and we are to be confident in all our actions. But the more I talk to other people in the realm of “adulthood” it’s not that your insecurities fall away from our teen years, we just get better at working through the fear. Why do I go into this? Because I feel Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits is music for adults, the twenty thirty forty somethings all still figuring it out. With lyrics like “Saturday friends, are you sure of them?”, from the song Right Ones, it opens up a peep hole into the land of “adults”. When we are teens we know who our friends are, we have our clique, and even if we don’t like them we stick with them. As adults we have the power to walk away, we can find new friends, we don’t have to stick with the wrong ones. There is a familiarity about the music of Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits, and I believe that familiarity comes from the fact their music encompasses the insecurity and the power that we have as “adults”. I don’t really care for the term “Young Adult” because it indicates an age in which you grow into an adult. I feel that being an adult is a mindset. And that mindset, I don’t think anyone ever feels like an adult.Rabbits Rabbits Rabbits get that, or at least their music conveys it.

( and for a friend that said i didn’t say anything about the band, in my best music writer voice: the music is dreamy but not trancey, upbeat but not pop, more like you have a small pep in your step, there is no gimmick or niche, it just is what it is and that’s good.)

 A9.Yes. Anywhere from 2-6 cups a day.

Q10. Best show you have ever been too?

A10.There have been many. Off the top of my head I would say The Jesus Lizard reunion show last year in Milwaukee was a face-melter
Strong coffee and crisp morning air. A curious sun peaks through the blinds after the voyeuristic moon goes to bed. Murder By Death is grounded in there honest song writing and rich thick sound, playing the soundtrack to a passionate hearts intimate moments. Capturing the soul touching and gut wrenching knots we all try to ignore giving our genuine emotions an authentic voice. I define music by the emotions and images it invokes, I tend to stray away from normal Music journalism jargon. But I want to say that to me alt-country has always been a genre of music that speaks to my soul. That in another life I was a whiskey drinking man with a beat up truck, and a broken heart carrying a tragic story with hope always on the horizon but sometimes gets to hard to see. Well my past life would listen to Murder By Death and with songs like Foxglove, might be inspired to try again for that glimmer of love and hope.
