David Bray : A Snake With Your Tea?

Photobucket
(image courtesy of David’s facebook profile picture)

Name: DAVID BRAY

Nickname: Tragically I guess it would be DAVE. If i type it like this D.A.V.E it looks a little more interesting?

Sign: Pisces (if that’s what you meant? Or is it some kind of masonic thing I’m missing out on? Went for dinner the other night opposite the huge masonic building in Great Queen St in London. There are a LOT of masons. They all had a sign.)

Favorite:

Book. ‘Jesus’ Son’ Denis Johnson

Season. Winter

Beverage. Morning coffee, evening wine.

Q1. What is something you hate doing, but must do anyways?

A1. Anything involving arithmetic. I’m number blind. I tell myself that to cover up stupidity. I need numbers to count pens, measure pieces of paper, sugar in coffee, get on the right bus. All that.

Q2. If you had to give up one of your 5 senses, which one would you abandon?

A2.I think I’ve already lost my sense of smell. My girlfriend constantly tells me she can smell cat’s piss. I can’t. At all. Which either means she is a cat. Or I stink of piss.Tell me if I stink of piss.

Q3. Most rewarding moment of your life thus far?

A3. Every day alive brings its own rewards.

Q4. If you owned a parrot, what would you teach it to say?

A4. ‘He’s not here.’

Q5. How old were you the first time you got drunk? How was the experience?

A5. I was 13 or 14. Went through the contents of my parent’s drinks cabinet with a friend. We had a small window of opportunity when my mother went out. About 10.00 a.m.- 12ish. On a Thursday morning in the school holidays. I remember laughing. A lot. And barely able to stand. It was difficult to get it together to disappear from the house before discovery. It was a very methodical, measured approach.

Q6. Whats the most interesting thing you found lying on the street/sidewalk/ground/random place?

A6. A half eaten snake in Anerley, London. If you know it, then you will know that is no place to find a snake. I’m not talking grass snake, it was a hefty looking thing. Cobra size. It looked tragic. We left it. An hour later it had moved up the street by a mile or so.

Q7. How many car accidents have you been in?

A7. Four happened in the space of 6 weeks, culminating in me totally writing off my car. A slow impact, 5mph head-on collision. Really mundane. I think I prefer the slow crashes.

Q8. Do you have a phobia?

A8. Moths. I scream. Proper screaming. Embarrassing.

Q9. If you could morph into any animal what would it be?

A9. Bear. So I could see if I really do shit in the woods. What an unpleasant answer. Should have said unicorn. I don’t shit in the woods. Not that I could smell it. Going to stop typing about shit now.

Q10. If you knew when the world was going to freeze for ten minutes, what would you plan to do in those 10mins?

A10. Check out what’s really going on in that masonic building.

*I have held on to this survey for WAY to long now and it needs to get out into the universe damn it. Unfortunately I don’t have the time to do a proper write up on the work except for the fact that its mysterious,  sultry, and seduces you to look a little bit closer. Please check out more of David Bray’s work on his website and check back later for a better write up.

A10.  i can read her mind.

There is something completely whimsical and delightful about the work of Timothy Karpinski. Like the butterflies of first love his work lifts your mood instantly. His close attention to detail and meticulous dedication to cutting out perfect pieces of paper to place back together sets him apart from most artists in the scene. The work has a completely organic and innocent nature to it like a child creating with construction paper in an elementary school art class. At his gallery shows he has created magical installations, awakening the curious voyeur in all of us. Walls covered with poems and doodles and decorated with owls and other eclectic nick-knacks give you the feeling that this maybe just what Timothy’s world at home looks like. The first piece of art work I ever purchased was a small piece by Timothy entitled “Ready To See My Sweetheart”. It’s a very modest piece of a boy standing with balloons and flowers in hand; calling to the romantic in me I hope to one day live that picture I bought and be greeted with balloons and flowers.

Charmaine Olivia – Dandelion Wine

Name: Charmaine Olivia
Nickname: Charmy, Charms, Mimi, but I’m most commonly known to my friends as “Meems”
Sign: Pisces

Favorite:
Ice Cream: Brown Butter. crazy, i know. omgsogood.
Book: Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury
Color: changes daily, usually greens or blues

Q1. Are you superstitious?
A1. No, but I have a lot little rituals that I do for good luck, or for very specific results. For example, if I stare at something green and blink 33 times, the light should change from red to green, but sometimes it takes more than 33. Or if I’m trying to shoot a basketball I first have to bounce it X amount of times and use a specific part of my hand to bounce the ball with. I do this until I find the right combination that awards me my basket.

Q2. Best show you’ve ever been too?
A2. The first Animal Collective show I went to, I think it was back in 2004. They played much smaller venues then, which is always nice.

Q3. What have you said you would never do, but have ended up doing?
A3. Wearing high waisted skinny jeans. Those were always deemed “mom pants” when I was younger. My 13-year old self would be horrified to see what I wear now.

Q4. Bathroom read?
A4. Read? no. Words With Friends on my iPhone. I’m hopelessly addicted.

Q5. Most Embarrassing Moment?
A5. Weird language barriers while backpacking through europe. Too many to count.

Q6. If you were a Transformer, what car/truck would you transform into?
A6. some sexy italian car

Q7. What was your favorite cartoon when you were a kid?
A7. Tom & Jerry, or those old Tex Avery cartoons. Gosh, they don’t make ’em like they used to.

Q8. What’s your vice?
A8. All things crunchy and salty. I am especially fond of cheese puffs and doritos. And really sweet white wines. but not paired with doritos. ew.

Q9. When are you most creative morning, mid day, or evening?
A9. Midday to evening. Morning is strictly reserved for tea-drinking and kitten-cuddling.

Q10. You were slipped a radioactive roofie by an evil scientist and now have mutated, what’s your superpower?
A10. Alex Mack!! Omg I haven’t thought about that show in years! I always wanted to be able to do what she does. What, turn in to a silvery liquid and creep around? Move things with her mind? Yeah. Bingo. That or maybe the ability to change the weather. I’m always cold, it’d be nice to have a few extra degrees here and there.

Charmaine Olivia blends realism and illustration together in a way that her figures and subject are filled with a sophisticated whimsy.  Beautiful and mysterious one wants to have a conversation with the women Charmaine paints rather than sleep with them. Inspired by nature, woodlen critters can be spotted through out her work along with a a distinct feminine charm.

Please see more of Charmaine’s work on her website.

Q4. If you could live in a movie for a day, which movie would it be? Would you be yourself or another character?

A6. Unfortunately no, my real friends wouldn’t leave me alone.

Q7. Personal Quote?
A7. “Well, it could be worse.”

Q8. Do you believe in horoscopes and zodiac signs?
A8. Not really, I’ll flip to the back of a magazine to read it but mainly for entertainment purposes.

Q9. Do you drink coffee? If so how many cups a day?
A9. I try to keep it at a maximum of one a day + 5 cups of green tea.

Q10. Best show you have ever been too?
A10. Technically, it’s not a show but I would have to say my dad’s Naturalization Oath Ceremony. Twenty years ago, we came to the U.S. without anything – money, clothes, or a home. Now, after all his sweat and tears, my brothers and I have everything we ever needed and more. To him, the naturalization certificate embodied the years of us having nothing to everything. Yes, my dad (and mom) is pretty kick-ass.

Food: Pizza is probably something I could never say NO to, but I love food—good, healthy ,feel good yumz.
Book. This Japanese book about other Japanese books-haha- I don’t know what it’s called but I love it so much. It just has pictures of cool looking Japanese publications.
Season: All of them, except the parts in between ( the rainy cold muddy parts).

Q1. Are you superstitious?
A1.No, but I sometimes don’t step on cracks when I’m walking down the street. Not because I think the world will fall apart, I just don’t like to.

Q2. Best show you’ve ever been too?

A2.Final Fantasy (Owen Pallete) at the Troubador.

Q3. What have you said you would never do, but have ended up doing?
A3.Drive longer than an hour to work. Eat cooked carrots.

Q4. Bathroom read?
A4.The ingredients of whatever is sitting next to me because I usually forget to grab something.

Q5. Most Embarrassing Moment?
A5.I had a crush on a bookstore ( still do) and I couldn’t get the door to open so then I got really flustered, pointed at the hours of operation sign and said something like “OH THAT’S WHY!” like the store was closed and I couldn’t get in and that is why the door was so hard to open, and then I walked away. It was all a blur and I realized that the store had been open an hour, I just didn’t pay attention to it and I did all that stuff by embarrassment default. It was really bizarre. I don’t know who saw me, but I’m sure someone did.

Q6. If you were a Transformer, what car/truck would you transform into?
A6.One that transforms into a pizza.

Q7. What was your favorite cartoon when you were a kid?
A7.Garfield. He inspired me to write my first illustrated book ( in the 1st grade) about a cat and a dog and a man. Haha. I mostly just loved Odie, though.

Q8. What’s your vice?
A7.pizza

Q9. When are you most creative morning, mid day, or evening?
A9.Late late late at night and when I have something due in a very short amount of time, or when I first wake up.

Q10. You were slipped a radioactive roofie by an evil scientist and now have mutated, what’s your superpower?
A10.Teleportation!

Christine Hale is not only a fresh and fun illustrator, she has amazing taste in music. The list of musicians she has made a band poster for would make the coolest of indie kids blush. I have some good cool kid creds. but this girl is at the head of the table. Talented artist with a discerning ear. And she does comics too. And she has an amazing band, The Hoof and The Heel.

I am certifiably jealous!!

Please check out her website for more work but here are a few of my favorites. And I spot an MAOI surveyed band and Nathan Deyoungs favorite animal. Click picture for a jump to their surveys.

Q1. What can you not live without?
A1.Coffee. I think I drink like 3-4 cups a day. I usually drink drip; no lattes, cappuccino, frappuccinos, etc. I think it’s because I’ve been working as a coffee barista for like 4 years. They turned me into an addict. Shit.

Q2. What movie would you live in for a day? Would you be yourself or another character?
A2.This one’s a tough one. Probably Downtown 81, the documentary on the New York art scene during the early 80’s with Basquiat. I’d probably be myself and just hang out. Same deal with Style Wars.

Q3. Favorite part of what you do?
A3.Depends what I do. I do a lot of things. When I draw, I enjoy surprising myself. I never really know what I’ll see. The drawing process is like jazz for me. I just go at it and see what I create. When I make music, I enjoy the harmony. Making music has the ability to make strangers feel like family. When I spend time with my girlfriend, I like when we dream together. When you dream with another, everything seems a little more real.

Q7. Pet Peeve?
A7.People that don’t give eye contact.

Q8. What’s your vice?
A8.I really like good herbs.

Q9. Best compliment ever received?
A9.James O’Barr, the Crow, once called me a pansy for putting cream in my coffee. I took it as a compliment.

Q10. Have you ever stolen a library book?
A10.Nope, but I’ve wanted to. Diary of a Genius by Dali.
