Christine Hale is not only a fresh and fun illustrator, she has amazing taste in music. The list of musicians she has made a band poster for would make the coolest of indie kids blush. I have some good cool kid creds. but this girl is at the head of the table. Talented artist with a discerning ear. And she does comics too. And she has an amazing band, The Hoof and The Heel.

I am certifiably jealous!!

Please check out her website for more work but here are a few of my favorites. And I spot an MAOI surveyed band and Nathan Deyoungs favorite animal. Click picture for a jump to their surveys.

INFLUENCE

Is it because of television
or magazines
or nature
or parents good intentions
that a child
stands at a foggy bathroom mirror
between class periods
practicing what it will feel like
to tell someone he doesn’t know very well
“I love you.”

COPE

What does it mean to you
to be disappointed?
When you imagine disappointment
does it have a face?
A scowl ike an ugly high school thing
coming back at you from the past?
It’d be nice if we could put a face
on all those emotions
that scare us into mediocrity.
Make it easier to poke out their eyes.

SANE

There are crazy people out there
who talk to cats
and see ghosts in their food.
They’re all over the place-
driving the bus,
making a bagel,
locked up somewhere you don’t have to look at.
There are crazy people out there
and many having a better time than you.

Math the Band…love IT!

A band with good beats and humor trumps the grumpy good beat band any day of the week. And in this case Math the Band has won the war with fun crazy dancey toe tappen keyboard rifts and silly sometimes my favorite irrelevant lyrics. Plus they put their bad reviews on their myspace page. One has to admire the bands confidence to say “Hey some people think we suck but we still love you”

Plus their merch is awesome got to love a band with good merch. I’m considering a future career as a merch girl. You can check out their merch on their myspace page or click this and see my favorite. I need it and I need it now.

Nathan DeYoung integrates the freedom of abstract color and broad strokes with the tight delicate refinement of his breathtakingly rendered women. Creating a dream world of sense and confusion. At his show with Thinkspace gallery he better explained their existence with an attached poem to the piece. Nathan’s self taught ability is baffling yet a statement in itself to his passion and dedication. One has to put their hands in their pocket to keep from touching the canvas. With the maturity of an old master taking hundreds of hours to perfect one piece, it’s good to see he is still twenty-something at heart.

A4.I’d go see the dinosaurs, probably during the Cretaceous Period because that’s when T-Rex and Triceratops were around and it was its most lush time. I’d give anything to see these reptiles come to life.

Q5. Most Embarrassing Moment?
A5.I’ve had so many…Here’s a great one. I fell on my pie once!I went out of my way to buy this big delicious strawberry rhubarb pie; it was magnificent, the biggest pie ever. I had to take the bus (since I don’t drive), so when the bus pulled into the depot I had to get off, and there I am … the first one at the steps and so excited to get home and begin the gorging. And at the exact moment the doors opened my ankle gave out and like a limp noodle I lost my balance and fell out of the bus with arms flying out in front to break my fall…but what broke my fall was my big pie!! Into the pie I fell, in front of everyone on the (full) bus behind me and the unloading passengers from the entire depot. When I got home I looked at the remains of my smashed up pastry and with tears streaming I ate the whole thing at home….

Q6. Best compliment ever received?
A6.I was at my art opening in Vancouver and a gentleman came up to me with a very surprised looked and said “I wanted to shake your hand, i couldn’t believe this art was done by an Italian/Canadian girl, i was convinced it was the work of a Japanese man!” I worked so hard to develop my style so it would be as authentic manga style as i could and this was the moment when i realized i reached my goal.

A9. The Goonies!I’d be the little Asian boy with all the gadgets – he was so cute and clever.

Inconsiderate people…or is it loud gum chewing….ahh…can’t stand either equally.

Don’t miss Camilla’s last show in Los Angeles (not indefinite but for a good measure of time) at Thinkspace Gallery, “Vain Remains”.

4210 Santa Monica Blvd. 90029.

The gallery will be open Fri-Sun 12-6!!! And is coming down next week 😦 so support this amazing artist!! Plus free Gelskins I’m sporting my “Yuuta” Camilla skin right now on the very laptop I’m using to write this blog. Oh WOW!!

(And Caia Koopman Gelskins came in too. If free Gelskins aren’t incentive enough then you’re not a real art fan are you…hmm hmm hmm??)

My final note on Camilla d’Errico aside from her talented magna paintings is that she is an artist one can easily fall in love with in person. I think everyone has had an experience when they have met someone they admire and their true persona dashes the idea of the idol; at the end of night walking away with a sack full of disappointment. It is not this way with Camilla, with a heart of gold she is open and excited to talk to all her adoring fans. Of course with a dash of social awkwardness (because really what arty person doesn’t have a bit of social anxiety) I was her wingwomen and she was mine, definitely one of my more favorite nights at Thinkspace.

A1.Just once. I didn’t do a full stop at a stop sign. I started crying! and the policeman let me go ticket free!

Q2.What animal if your spirit guide?

A2I Looooooveee your questions! ahhhh! So refreshing!!!!! mine is a black panther. I have had many dreams that were incredibly vivid, mystical, involving a female black panther, roaring at me to toughen up! She shows me how to be A REAL WOMAN! 🙂

Q3. What’s your vice?

A3.Oh gaaaaawwwddd, my indecisiveness!!! no wait, maybe it’s my day dreaminess, no wait, it’s my…just kidding…yeah, my vice is definitely that I have such a hard time making up my mind.

Q4.If you could live in a movie for a day, which movie would it be? Would you be yourself or another character?

A4.wow,, such a fabulous question!!! I would be in Labyrinth and I would be David Bowie’s character!!!!

Q5. If your art was an ice cream flavor which one would it be?

A5.Definitely rainbow swirl, with dark chocolate sharp poky pieces, and sprinkles! and a candle symbolizing a new birthday each day, like you can start fresh each day with a wish- and be reborn with a clean slate!

Q6. Did you have an imaginary friend as a child?

A6. Yes. Although i don’t remember this, but my parents told me I had an imaginary friend named Stephanie, and every time I did something bad i would tell them, “but it was Stephanie who did it!”

Q7. Personal Quote?

A7.(Charlie will send this one, he seems to remeber all of my quotes, and I am blanking out!)

Q8. Do you believe in horoscopes and zodiac signs?

A8. Yes, I think there is something to it that is quite mysterious! I believe the planets have a definite influence over our basic personality. Although I don’t think it’s good to think they have total say or power over our destiny. I do love it though! Yeah, I really do believe there is something to the whole astrology thing for sure! I just really love it!

Q9. Do you drink coffee? If so how many cups a day?

A9. I AM A COFFEE ADDICT. it’s really ridiculous. Every morning I have to have coffee otherwise I freak out!!! I only really need it in the morning, but I love it, i am a LOVER of that bean.

Q10. Best show you have ever been too?

A10. I think when I first saw Tori Amos, I was very young, and it made such a deep impact on my life. I remeber sitting in the theater and balling my eyes out, wiping loads of snot all over my chair becuase i just ran out of room on my sleve. i was just SO moved by her raw emotional honesty and balls and insanity and also vulnerable, Openess with the audience. That forever changed and inlfuenced me.

Isn’t she amazing! And although The Happy Hollows are a rockn band thanks to RFSL a while ago (months and months) I was able to download Sarah’s song Driver. Its amazing I listen to it at least once every other day, especially while getting ready it just puts me in a good mood. If you can track down that song do it! NOW!!

ALSO The Happy Hollows will be having their first Album release next Friday, September 4th at Spaceland. Please go out and support this well deserved achievement.
